Chase court apartments: Interviews under way in fire investigation

The cause of a fire Saturday that destroyed a three-story apartment building under construction and damaged two other apartment buildings was still under investigation Sunday, said Mark Bradford, deputy chief with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

Bradford said subcontractors who were at the fire scene would be interviewed today and Tuesday.

The fire at Chase Court Apartments, 1942 Stewart Ave., caused an estimated $600,000 damage to the three buildings, making it the costliest fire in Douglas County in the past year, Bradford said.

Above are the charred remains from the fire.

The fire was called in to 911 at 1:21 p.m. Saturday and was brought under control shortly after 2 p.m. Only the north building was occupied. No occupants were hurt, although two firefighters suffered minor burns and were treated at the scene.

Chase Court is owned by Doug Compton and his firm, First Management Inc., Lawrence.
