Universal expands Orlando offerings

Universal Orlando’s Royal Pacific Resort is set to open in June as part of the luxury theme park with high-tech rides thrilling enough to entice sophisticated teen-agers.

The June opening completes Universal Orlando’s 10-year, $1-billion “dynamic park as a major challenger to its Disney neighbor,” according to spokesman Mario Ruiz. The new theme park has “technology designed to appeal to all members of the family, not just small children,” Ruiz said. One attraction, called Twister Ride It Out, “re-creates the chaos and electrical surge of being in a hurricane.”

Beside the exotic amusements, the 53-acre resort contains 1,000 luxury hotel rooms, an Asian-themed restaurant called Tchoup Chop and a lot of lagoons, palm trees and Pacific island artifacts. Visit it at www. universalorlando.com.

Boston refurbishing cemetery for patriots

Boston’s historic Granary Burying Ground, the final resting place of some of America’s greatest patriots, is getting a facelift, including the restoration of wrought iron fences and addition of new pathways.

Among those buried at the downtown graveyard are John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Robert Treat Paine, who all signed the Declaration of Independence; Paul Revere; Peter Faneuil, benefactor of the well-known downtown landmark, and James Otis, a Revolutionary War-era lawyer.

The first phase of the project has been completed. That included repairing the fences that had been installed in the 1830s and adding pathways to the more popular graves.

The next phase of the facelift will include resetting 170 headstones.
