St. John to recognize vice principal

A reception to recognize Kathy Duffer’s many years of service to St. John the Evangelist Parish and Lawrence Catholic School will be after the 5:30 p.m. liturgy today in the parish hall, 1234 Ky. Duffer is vice principal and sixth-grade teacher at St. John School.

The Knights of Columbus will have a breakfast after morning liturgies Sunday in the parish hall.

A presentation on the Eucharist and Eucharistic Adoration will be from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Sunday in the parish hall. The Solemnity of the Most Holy body and Blood of Christ will be celebrated the weekend of June 2.

Young parishioners ages 5 to 14 who are interested in dancing at the Fiesta in June should call Lori at 842-8481 or Linda Anguiano at 841-8281. Practice will begin soon.

The monthly Taize service sponsored by St. John the Evangelist and Plymouth Congregational churches will be at 7 p.m. Friday in Plymouth’s South Chapel, 925 Vt. This ecumenical prayer service for peace is open to all and includes music, scripture and moments for silence and reflection.

Corpus Christi opens doors for Day of Prayer

There will be a Day of Prayer for healing Sunday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St. The church will be open until after the evening prayer at 5 p.m.

The Catholic Mother’s Group will get together for the last meeting of the school year at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday on the second floor at Corpus Christi School. Experienced mothers will share advice on families and raising children. Please call Mary Jo Reed at 841-4816 if you will be using the child care provided or if you have any questions.

Church members to lead sessions during summer

The Adult Education Department of First Christian Church, 1000 Ky., will offer a series of sessions led by various members of the church during the summer. All classes will meet in Fellowship Hall during the 10:10-10:50 a.m. Sunday School time.

Sample topics include “A Brief history of Christianity First Century through Today,” “Who the Devil are the Disciples,” “Were our Founding Fathers Christian? You Decide” and the youth culture.

Calvary Temple to mark Pentecost Sunday

Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th Terrace, will be celebrating Pentecost on Sunday. The Rev. Marshall Lackrone will deliver two special messages commemorating the events of the original Pentecostal meeting.

Junior high students to be confirmed

Fifteen junior high school students will be confirmed Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. The youths have been studying the Bible, United Methodist history, mission and social justice issues since January.

The class will be introduced at the end of the 8:30 a.m. service and the beginning of the 11 a.m. service. The Rite of Confirmation will be taken during the 9:40 a.m. service.

Prairie Worship begins at 5:30 p.m. May 25 on the church’s west campus (the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 40 and Kansas Highway 10).

The 30-minute service will be offered throughout the summer. It will include scripture, music, devotions and time for personal reflection.

St. Margaret’s plans sermon series, picnics

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt continues his six-part sermon series Sunday with “Learning How to Ask In Faith” at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The annual parish picnic takes place at all services Sunday, with special worship services held outdoors, special musical guests, face painting, balloon making and a potluck dinner.

Unitarians slate talk and potluck picnic

Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship, 1263 N. 1100 Road, presents “Spiritual Celebration: The Web Revisited” at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a coffee social hour at 10:30 a.m. and a potluck picnic at 11 a.m.

Trinity combines picnic and Pentecost service

Trinity parish will combine their services for Pentecost on Sunday. The service will be at 9:30 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt. Afterward, an all-church picnic will be on the lawn.

Trinity Choir will present musical entertainment and Shirley Reese will provide piano accompaniment for an old-fashioned singalong during the picnic.

Workshop takes a look at peacemaking skills

A peacemaking workshop will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Mayflower Room at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The free workshop, “Daring to Hope: What is Peacemaking?” will be led by the Rev. Mike Poage, former associate pastor at Plymouth.

Middle Eastern food will be served at 5 p.m. and the discussion will begin at 5:30 p.m. Child care will be provided.

Trinity’s program honors graduates

The children of Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., will be featured Sunday as part of the Pentecost celebration. The children will sing and play chimes at the 11 a.m. service. Graduates also will be honored.

Church members will plant flowers at the parsonage, which is being prepared for the arrival of the Rev. Gary Teske and his family. Teske is the church’s new pastor.

Assembly of God church to show simulcast

The Pentecost Sunday Simulcast, “Pentecost, Power for Life,” will be viewed at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

The one -hour show will be broadcast via satellite to Assemblies of God churches throughout the United States. The simulcast will focus on the understanding of Pentecost and its importance.

The event is open to the public.

Pastor to give advice to graduating seniors

A two-part series titled “Sound Advice to Seniors” will be presented by the Rev. Don Dunn at 10:15 a.m. Sunday and May 26 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road. The series is based on I Timothy 4:12.

Graduate Recognition Sunday will be at 10:15 a.m. May 26.

Children ages 4 through sixth grade can participate in the church’s Vacation Bible School. With the theme “Son Canyon,” the session will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 17 through June 21.

Observation to include birthday cake

A celebration of the founding of the Christian Church will be observed Sunday at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Events will begin at the 10:30 a.m. Fellowship Time, which will feature a birthday cake for the church. Red decorations will commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles on the Day of Pentecost.

Communion will be observed at the 11 a.m. service.

Children’s choirs perform for Lake View

The children’s choirs at Lawrence Free Methodist church will present a program at 2:30 p.m. Sunday for residents of Lake View Manor.

Included in the program will be songs and anthems by God’s Kids and Kingdom Kids Choirs, and solos by Megan Anderson, Brianna Landon and Kimberly Scherman.

After the program the children and their families will gather at the church, 3001 Lawrence Ave., for a Choir Recognition Party to end the choir year.

Children to help celebrate Pentecost

A colorful procession of Pentecost banners, made and carried by elementary and preschool children, will begin the Pentecost celebration Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway. Services are at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Junior and senior high students will read scripture in various languages in remembrance of the happenings recorded in the Book of Acts. The Kids of the Kingdom Choir will join with the Chancel Choir to perform “This Little Light of Mine,” a choral arrangement by Donald Moore.

Worden Methodist to hold hymn sing

Singspiration Sunday will be 9:30 a.m. May 26 at Worden United Methodist Church, 3 1/2 miles west of the Baldwin junction on U.S. Highway 56.

The service features an old-fashioned hymn sing, food and fellowship.
