Police charge suspect in burglary

Extra patrols and surveillance in a southwest neighborhood plagued by burglaries the past two weeks paid off early Thursday for Lawrence Police.

About 3 a.m., officers watching a townhouse complex from an unmarked car arrested a man they found roaming in the 3500 block of West 22nd Street.

Friday afternoon, Brian K. Charles, 19, 3414 Augusta Drive, was charged with 10 counts alleging aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, theft and possession of marijuana.

“Detectives conducting surveillance observed him looking into the windows and trying the door knob of a residence,” Lt. Dan Affalter said.

Police launched investigations after a May 2 incident in which a woman woke up and found a man armed with a knife attempting to get into bed with her, police said. The woman fought with the man and he ran out of the residence.

Charles is charged with aggravated assault in that incident, which occurred in the 3700 block of West 24th Street, according to court documents.

Charles is charged with four counts of aggravated burglary, four counts of misdemeanor theft and one count each of aggravated assault and possession of marijuana.

During Charles’ first court appearance Friday afternoon, Douglas County Assistant Dist. Atty. Brad Burke requested bond for Charles be set at $100,000. Burke said Charles was a flight risk and a danger to the public.

Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel set the bond at $50,000 because Charles did not have a previous criminal record.

Nevertheless, Charles was unhappy and said he would not be able to post bond. Appearing over closed circuit television from the Douglas County Jail, he maintained his innocence.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “I’m going to fight this. I didn’t do all these crimes.”

Charles is scheduled to appear in court again at 2 p.m. Monday before Judge Jack Murphy.
