Lions’ Elwell loses in quarters

? Lawrence High’s Scott Elwell, a fourth-place finisher at last year’s Class 6A state tennis tournament, won’t improve on his performance this season.

After defeating Maize’s Jess Pringle, 6-4, 6-3, Elwell fell to Shawnee Mission East’s Nolan Lem, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday at Kossover Tennis Center.

Elwell rebounded to win his consolation quarterfinal match, 9-2, over Manhattan’s Andrew Rosander, but the best Elwell can finish is fifth place.

The only other city entry in the state tournament is the LHS doubles team of Owe Rambau and Jon Weygint. Rambau and Weygint lost their first two matches and were eliminated. Manhattan’s Brad and Drew Bieta beat Rambau-Weygint, 7-5, 6-0, and Wichita Campus’ Zach Harris and Marcus Milburn ousted the LHS team, 9-5.
