Joseph William Caleb

He was born July 16, 1922, in Ottawa, the son of Joseph Ignatious and Grace Irene (Chaney) Caleb. He lived in Ottawa and Garnett before moving to Apache Junction in 1976.

Mr. Caleb attended Indian schools in Wyandotte, Okla.; Genoa, Neb.; and at Haskell in Lawrence. He worked at Ford and Chevrolet agencies in Ottawa and Olathe and State Farm Insurance, Garnett. He owned and operated Caleb’s Collectibles and Antique Store in Apache Junction until he retired in 2001.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army-Air Force 64th Squadron in Europe and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1945.

Mr. Caleb was a life member and past commander of VFW Memorial Post No. 6397, Garnett. He also belonged to Ottawa Lodge No. 803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and American Legion Post No. 27, Apache Junction.

He married Norma Gere. They later divorced. He married Iris Plaschka Brownrigg on July 17, 1971, in Ottawa. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Laura Fix, Philadelphia, and Dale Joseph, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Debra Sylvester, Ottawa; three stepsons, Randy Brownrigg, Ottawa, Rodger Brownrigg, Emporia, and Rick Brownrigg, Tulsa, Okla.; three sisters, Clio Church, Carol Marks and Patricia Thomas, all of Pomona; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until service time today at the mortuary.
