Manhattan ? Lawrence High senior Andrea Hemphill qualified first in the 50 and 100 freestyle at Friday’s Class 6A state swimming and diving meet at KSU Natatorium.

She had times of 24.88 in the 50 and 54.14 in the 100, attaining the best times in the state in the preliminary events.

Sarah Marlow qualified second in the 500 freestyle prelims in 5:15.52.

“We did great,” LHS coach Ryan Adams said. “Everyone swam like I knew they could and like I expected them to. Andrea being first in the 50 and 100 is awesome. I think she will win them tomorrow. Everyone that swam today will swim tomorrow in the consolation or championship finals, which is great.”

Free State’s top qualifier was Ashley Jackson, who qualified third in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 free.

“No, not even close,” FSHS coach Jama Crady said, asked if the Firebirds swam to their potential. “We didn’t swim anywhere close to where we need to be today, but there’s always tomorrow. Hopefully, we can come out tomorrow and do what needs to be done.”

Athletes had to place in the top eight for championship finals; top 16 for consolation finals.
