‘Landspout’ tornadoes seen in Dickinson County

Two rare “landspouts” tornadoes that form from the ground up were reported Thursday afternoon in southeastern Dickinson County.

A sheriff’s dispatcher said no injuries were reported in either storm.

“They’re tornadoes, but the mechanism of how they develop is different,” said George Phillips, a science officer with the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Instead of developing at the trailing edge of a thunderstorm, Phillips said, landspouts form from swirling air along front boundaries in the early stages of a thunderstorm.

“In the northeast quarter of Kansas, we probably only get one or two events a year like that,” he said.

Body of 2nd Nebraskan found in reservoir

Divers on Thursday found the second of two Nebraska men who drowned at the Glen Elder State Park in north-central Kansas.

Donald Hesser and Edwin Schmidt, both of Adams, Neb., were reported missing Tuesday afternoon after a fisherman reported seeing a capsized boat on Waconda Lake. Both men were in their 70s.

Divers found Schmidt’s body about 3 p.m. Thursday. Hesser’s body was recovered Wednesday.

The boat overturned sometime Tuesday afternoon and drifted north until it was just a few feet from shore, Sheriff Doug Daugherty said.

The boat was pulled to shore on the north side of the lake.

Firefighters find body in burning car’s trunk

Firefighters responding to a report of a burning car Thursday morning found a body in the car’s trunk, police said.

Police have not yet identified the body, or released a cause of death. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

Firefighters responded to the report shortly before 4 a.m. The car, which police said had not been reported stolen, was in an area near the Fairfax Industrial District.

Third quadruplet allowed to leave hospital

The third of four quadruplets born in April went home from the hospital Wednesday, and the fourth baby is expected to be released by the weekend.

Camden Tetrick joined his brothers, Parker and Peyton, at their Wichita home. The fourth quad, Christian, likely will be released today or by the weekend from Wesley Medical Center, spokeswoman Helen Thomas said.

The quadruplets were born April 5 to Christina and Patrick Tetrick. The Tetricks also have a 4-year-old son, Dakota.
