6 KU seniors are awarded Fulbrights

Six seniors graduating from Kansas University have received Fulbright grants to study overseas next school year.

The grants provide round-trip travel, health insurance, tuition and living expenses for an academic year.

Since 1947, 363 KU students have gotten Fulbright grants.

This year’s KU winners are:

 Shawna Smith, political science, international studies, sociology and communications studies major from Hays.

She will study at Oxford University in England, where she will investigate comparative electoral and political sociology.

 Holly Worthen, English and international studies major from McPherson.

She will study in Mexico to analyze how male migration to the United States affects women’s roles within agricultural systems and relationships with agricultural biodiversity and sustainable agriculture. She will spend part of the year at the Colegio de Postgraduados in Ciencias Agricolas in Montecillo, the other part in Guadalajara.

 Katherine Marchin, chemistry major from Manhattan. She will conduct research in the field of supramolecular chemistry at the University of Valencia in Spain.

 Almas Sayeed, philosophy, women’s studies and international studies major from Wichita. She will study conflict-resolution strategies by six Israeli and Palestinian women’s peace organizations.

 Mark Cooper, geography doctoral student from Warrensburg, Mo.

Cooper will complete the fieldwork for his dissertation while studying the Bulgarian language in Bulgaria. His work involves comparing energy efficiency of different cities.

 Elizabeth Riggs, aerospace engineering and English major from Bellevue, Neb., will teach English to children in Korea and research the effect of recent economic changes on children and university students.
