Royals activate Shouse

? The Kansas City Royals activated left-hander Brian Shouse from the disabled list Monday and designated first baseman Dave McCarty for assignment.

McCarty, 32, had just three hits in 32 at-bats with 10 strikeouts this year. A six-year major league veteran, he joined the Royals in March 2000. Kansas City has 10 days to trade McCarty, send him outright to the minors or place him on waivers for the purpose on his conditional release.

Shouse went on the DL on April 28 with inflammation in his left elbow. The rookie reliever was 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 games.
