ICC pull-out

To the editor:

I’ve just received an e-mail saying that the U.S. is pulling out of the International Criminal Court, presumably out of a concern that some necessary evil of our anti-terrorism policy might be hauled before the ICC some day. This poses a dilemma for civics teachers here and around the world because it suggests that international courts are fine for other countries but not for America. Following that logic, it is easy to imagine the ICC falling to pieces overnight. Is that President Bush’s idea of world leadership?
