Tongie, Mill Valley win KVL titles

Chieftains claim boys crown; Jaguars take girls league

? Tonganoxie and Mill Valley dominated Thursday night’s Kaw Valley League track and field championships at Santa Fe Trail High.

Tongie and Mill Valley went 1-2 in the boys team scoring while the two schools’ finishes were reversed in the girls team standings. Tongie outscored the Jaguars, 110-97, in the boys competition. In the girls scoring, Mill Valley compiled 147 points to the Chieftains’ 113.

Perry-Lecompton finished third in both the boys and girls competition.

The Chieftains won the boys title despite posting only two victories Dustin Schultz in the pole vault and in the 4×800 relay. Meanwhile, Mill Valley’s Griffin Lee won the 800, 1600 and 3200. The Jaguars also had gold medals from Andrew Sudduth in the high hurdles and John Goodin in the shot put.

Santa Fe Trail’s Cameron Babb was a double winner, capturing the high jump and long jump. SFT’s Ryan Hulings won the intermediate hurdles.

Perry-Lecompton had gold medalists in Jared Swafford (100) and Nolan Putnam (javelin).

Mill Valley’s girls posted double winners in Heather Sprague (100 and 200) and Aubrey Hale (1600 and 3200). The Jaguars’ Mindy DeGroot won the high jump.

Tongie had a double winner in Katie Jeannin (400 and 800). The Chieftains’ Heather Helm and Erin O’Brien won the intermediate hurdles and pole vault respectively.

P-L’s gold medalists were Jackie Corcoran in the shot and Brandy Jones in the high hurdles.
