Mother’s Day involves more love than money

? Mom isn’t worth more than fifty bucks.

At least that’s what a recent online poll of 611 people by Money Management International suggests. The Houston-based credit-counseling corporation found that 58 percent of females and 53 percent of males polled plan to spend less than $50 on Mother’s Day.

Dad won’t make out much better; 46 percent expect to spend the same amount on Father’s Day as they did for mom.

But as the Beatles said, money can’t buy love.

“When asked what they want for Mother’s Day, most moms request time with their family, recognition of their hard work and relaxation,” said Rudy Cavazos, director of corporate and media relations for MMI. “None of which require spending a large amount of money.”

Fifty bucks won’t buy Mom much, but here are a few possibilities.

For about $50 a year, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is selling TracFone 24-hour roadside assistance. TracFone’s benefits include flat-tire changes, towing up to 30 miles, battery jump-starts, fuel delivery, vehicle lockouts and accident/collision assistance.

The service covers mom and up to four other family members. Interested? Visit the Web site at www.24roadside.com.

For certain metro-area mothers, large snow globes of Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco or Los Angeles go for $35 plus tax, shipping and handling at Saks Fifth Avenue’s Web site, www.saksfifthavenue.com.

Grandma may be cheaper; a Sarasota, Fla., globe is only $21.90.

Perhaps something a bit racier?

The First Fantasy Collection Kit from Stormyleather might whip up some Mother’s Day magic. Available online at www.stormyleather.com, the kit comes complete with blindfold, leather paddle, restraints, feather tickler and instruction booklet. All this for $55.95.

President John Quincy Adams once said, “All that I am my mother made me.”

Ace Hardware can help any mother’s building project with a Black and Decker 12-volt cordless drill for $49.99.

“My mom’s got it all,” said Chicago-based disc jockey Tim J. Evans.

“She just wants to get away from her family.”

She can do that courtesy of Air Tran Airways. A one-way ticket from Chicago to Miami this Sunday retails for $164 on Orbitz at www.orbitz.com.
