Sculpture exhibition brings new piece to Arts Center

The first sculpture to be installed in this year’s Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition was set in place Friday morning at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

“Alchemy,” by Willie Ray Parish of La Union, N.M., is a giant mobile: a half-ton steel base supports a half-ton, S-shaped piece that rotates by wind power. The S-shaped piece is made of 14-inch oil pipeline.

The sculpture exhibition will feature eight works, which are expected to be installed beginning next week in the downtown area.

In the above photo, Parish, left, watches as Jeff Ridgway, chairman of the exhibition committee for the arts center, removes protective wrapping from the sculpture prior to its installation.

Vinland: Festival to teach students about settlement history

Students will get a chance to take a glimpse of the past at the third Founders’ Day festival Tuesday at Vinland Elementary School. The event begins at 8:30 a.m.

Galen Hubbard, a field representative of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, is the event’s featured speaker. He will talk about American Indians that were in the Vinland area, southeast of Lawrence, when Kansas was opened for settlement in 1854. He will also talk about their cultures and traditions.

Students will act out a skit about the building of the railroad between Lawrence and Ottawa in 1967.

During the remainder of the day, participants will rotate from station to station. At each station, students will have the opportunity to travel back in time and experience things from the past, including quilting, wheat-weaving and arrowhead making.

The Vinland Heritage Committee coordinates the event.
