Royals rally to win Mizerock’s home debut – Kansas City 5, Cleveland 3

? John Mizerock got off to a good start at Kauffman Stadium.

After going 1-7 on Kansas City’s road trip, the Royals’ interim manager won his home debut Thursday night.

Kansas City's Donnie Sadler (1) runs past Cleveland catcher Einar Diaz, left, as he scores on Neifi Perez's double. The Royals overcame a three-run deficit for a 5-3 victory Thursday night in Kansas City. The Royals' A.J. Hinch looks on.

Mike Sweeney homered twice and Joe Randa hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning as the Royals rallied from a three-run deficit for a 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The Royals scored three runs in the eighth after the first two batters were retired. It was their first win in 20 games this season when they trailed entering the eighth inning.

“That was a thing of beauty, two outs, nobody on and we score three runs,” Mizerock said. “That was long overdue. It’s the first multi-run inning we’ve had in a while, and it came at a great time.”

The last time the Royals scored three or more runs in an inning was May 1.

Indians starter Bartolo Colon limited Kansas City to five hits, but three were homers. He left after Sweeney’s second homer tied it with two outs in the eighth.

“We know he’s got power and can tie it,” Cleveland manager Charlie Manuel said. “We know he’s hitting .328. We’re aware he can hurt us. Colon got a four-seam fastball right in the middle of the plate.”

Sweeney, who also hit a solo shot in the sixth, has four homers this season and 10 multi-homer games.

Carlos Beltran greeted reliever Ricardo Rincon (0-1) with a single and stole second. Randa’s single to center off David Riske, the third pitcher in the inning, scored Beltran. Neifi Perez added an RBI single.

Jeff Suppan (3-4) allowed three runs and seven hits in eight innings for the win.

“It was a battle,” Suppan said. “It was tough for me early on, identifying what I had. The bottom line was trusting my stuff, just using what I had, and going out there and pitching.”

Roberto Hernandez worked the ninth for his second save after beginning the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain.

Colon limited the Royals to one hit, Randa’s double in the second, before Sweeney homered with one out in the sixth. The homer ended Colon’s string of 18 scoreless innings.

Suppan walked Ricky Gutierrez and yielded a single to Matt Lawton in the first. Ellis Burks, who missed eight games with a strained right hamstring before returning Wednesday, doubled down the right-field line with two outs to score Gutierrez and Lawton.

The Indians added a run in the sixth when Burks, Travis Fryman and Brady Anderson singled to load the bases. Einar Diaz hit an RBI groundout to make it 3-0.

A.J. Hinch hit a solo home run, his first of the season, with two outs in the seventh to trim the Indians’ lead to 3-2.

Notes: Indians LF Russell Branyan was ejected in the first by plate umpire Chris Guccione for arguing a called third strike. Branyan’s career-high streak of homering in three straight games ended with the ejection. Anderson replaced Branyan. … Gutierrez extended his hitting streak to seven games. … Beltran, who stole second in the ninth, has swiped 23 bases without being caught dating to Aug. 11, 2001.
