Hershiser resigning from FSHS girls basketball post

Craig Hershiser, who compiled a 41-46 record in four years as Free State High’s girls basketball coach, has resigned.

His resignation was one of four announced Wednesday by FSHS athletic director Steve Grant. The others were: assistant football coach Mike Hill; assistant wrestling coach Anthony Brixious; and head cheerleading coach Cheryl Slack.

“I was pretty close to this decision a year ago,” Hershiser said. “I thought the responsible thing to do was come back as coach this year and continue with the program. We were losing a lot of kids from a year ago and thought we should keep our coaching staff intact. Plus, our tournament was only one year old and I thought it was important to maintain continuity.

“There are some professional objectives concerned, and I need more time to do that. I need more time to pursue an advanced degree, and my resigning will free up time with that.”

Hershiser stressed the decision to resign was his and he was not encouraged to step down.

“I just think there’s a stage you’re ready to move on,” he said. “I haven’t had a bad experience. I had a great experience here. I’ve had the chance to coach in a town I’ve lived in a long time. I’ve coached some great kids and worked with some great people.”

The Firebirds were 6-15 last season. The year before, they went 16-7 and went to the Class 6A state tournament for the only time in school history.

Hershiser said he didn’t plan to coach again and would keep his teaching position at FSHS.
