Hill ’embarrassed’ by Firebirds’ 14-0 loss to SM North

It wasn’t a pretty night for Free State High’s baseball team on Tuesday at the FSHS field.

The sky was overcast, the wind was gusting from the south, and the Firebirds suffered a 14-0 whitewashing by Shawnee Mission North.

“Offensively, we didn’t compete,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “We didn’t come out even trying to succeed and that’s our fault. We made our bed and we’re certainly sleeping in it.”

Hill was upset at a lack of effort by Free State (7-11) and the team’s inability to get the ball out of the infield. The Firebirds struck out eight times half of which were looking and grounded out 10 times. They also stranded seven.

“Honestly, this is as bad of a display of baseball, of competitiveness, of want-to and of desire as I’ve witnessed,” Hill said. “We were just a failure in every facet of the game and every facet of athletics, not just baseball. We had one or two guys who came to play and the rest didn’t, and that’s a sad statement.”

After the game, Hill talked to the team along the right-field line like he normally does, but didn’t spend as much time with his players as usual.

“I told them I was as embarrassed as I’ve ever been as a coach,” Hill said, “and that I was disappointed in their effort. That’s really all you can say.”

The Indians (6-11) jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the second inning on back-to-back wind-aided doubles by Jason Hale and Lee Epps and a single by Jeff Nitsche. The Indians could have scored more runs, but Epps was caught stealing third and two runners were stranded.

Charles Sharkey added a run for SM North in the top of the third with a solo home run to left field.

In the fourth, the Indians put two more runs on the board on a two-RBI double down the third base line by Sharkey.

Two Firebird errors helped lead to three Indians runs in the fifth inning, and SM North added six more runs in the top of the seventh with the help of two more errors, a hit batter and a dropped third strike to blow the game open.

Free State will return to action today at Olathe North, which Hill said would give the team an opportunity to determine where it stands.

“We’re going to come back (today) and see what we can get accomplished,” he said. “It’s time for the young men who step between the white lines to decide what they want. If they want to compete, they’ve demonstrated they can, but they have to make decisions and figure out what they want. They certainly got what they wanted tonight.”
