Bob Barker to host daytime Emmys

Game-show icon Bob Barker will be the host of the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony on May 17.

The 78-year-old Barker, a multiple Emmy-winner himself, will preside over the two-hour live CBS broadcast at the Theater at Madsion Square Garden.

“Bob did it seven or eight years ago, and it seemed like a natural fit this time,” said Lucy Johnson, senior vice president of CBS Daytime.

It also helps that Barker is the host of a prime-time edition of “The Price Is Right” on the same network that night at 7 p.m. CDT. The Daytime Emmys start at 8 p.m.

“He could end up (as the host of) a whole evening,” Johnson said.

Besides the tie to the prime-time special, Johnson said Barker was called in because he appeals to a broad cross-section of viewers.

“The Price is Right” the longest-running game show ever is a strong series in daytime, and CBS is going to air six prime-time specials this summer.

Ironically, a few years back, Barker boycotted the Daytime Emmys because producers refused to air the game-show categories during the prime-time telecast.

Barker is up for the Emmy for game-show host, in competition with Alex Trebek of the syndicated “Jeopardy!”, Ben Stein and Nancy Pimental of Comedy Central’s “Win Ben Stein’s Money” and Pat Sajak of the syndicated “Wheel of Fortune.”
