Area graduation activities announced

Students in the Class of 2002 will receive diplomas in commencements this month across the area. Beginning Friday, thousands of students will take the stage to celebrate earning high school diplomas and bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Rain-out information and venue changes for Lawrence-area graduations will be available on the Journal-World’s Web site at www.ljworld.com. The newspaper also will run lists of all area high school graduates in the coming weeks.

Here is a list of area commencements:

High schools

Baldwin High School 11 a.m. May 18 at Baldwin Junior High School. Baccalaureate services on 7 p.m. May 14 at BJHS.

Eudora High School 2:30 p.m. May 26 at the high school gym. Baccalaureate service at 1 p.m.

Free State High School 1 p.m. May 26 at Kansas Memorial Stadium. Graduation will be moved to Allen Fieldhouse in case of inclement weather. The school is not sponsoring a baccalaureate service.

Lawrence High School 4 p.m. May 26 at Kansas Memorial Stadium. Graduation will be moved to Allen Fieldhouse in case of inclement weather. The school is not sponsoring a baccalaureate service.

McLouth High School 4 p.m. May 18 at Gold Gym in McLouth High School.

Wellsville High School 2 p.m. May 19 at the district stadium.

Ottawa High School 2 p.m. May 19 at Steve Grogan Stadium. Baccalaureate service 7 p.m. May 18 at the high school gym.

DeSoto High School 4 p.m. May 19 at the high school. The school is not sponsoring a baccalaureate service.

Oskaloosa High School 3 p.m. May 19 at the high school gym. Baccalaureate service has not been scheduled.

Tonganoxie High School 7 p.m. May 18 at the high school football field in Tonganoxie. Baccalaureate service at 2:30 p.m. May 28 at the field.

Perry-Lecompton High School 2 p.m. May 18 in the high school gymnasium. No baccalaureate service is planned.

Santa Fe Trail High School 7 p.m. May 11 at the football field. The school is not sponsoring a baccalaureate service.

Colleges

Baker University 1 p.m. May 19 at Collins Sports Center in Baldwin. Speaker: Delbert M. Shankel, professor of microbiology and chancellor emeritus at Kansas University. Ceremony for School of Nursing and School of Professional and Graduate Studies at 4:30 p.m. Speaker: Karen Pletz, president and chief executive officer of the University of Health Sciences. Baccalaureate service at 9:30 a.m., First United Methodist Church.

Benedictine College 10 a.m. Saturday at the Raven Stadium in Atchison. Speaker: Kansas City Chiefs Coach Dick Vermeil

Donnelly College 8 p.m. May 15 in the Memorial Hall, Kansas City, Kan. Speaker: Daria Hernandez, employment development manager of Kansas Speedway.

Haskell Indian Nations University 10 a.m. Friday at Haskell Stadium. Speaker: Carlene Nofire-Morris and Erika Washee, Haskell co-student of the year. Graduation powwow begins 7 p.m.

Johnson County Community College 7:30 p.m. May 17 in the college gymnasium. Speaker: Clay Blair III, chairman of the Kansas Board of Regents.

Kansas City Kansas Community College 8 p.m. May 17 in the college fieldhouse. Speaker: Gloria Willis, president of Kansas City, Kan., school board.

Kansas University 2:30 p.m. May 19, procession from the Campanile on Mount Oread to Memorial Stadium. No main speaker.

University of Missouri-Kansas City Ceremonies at varying times Friday, Saturday and May 24. Speakers include Bernard Taylor, superintendent of the Kansas City, Mo., school district.
