Cleveland ? Omar Vizquel came to Jacobs Field smiling, and left the ballpark in an even better mood.

Vizquel went 5-for-5 with two RBIs, C.C. Sabathia won for the first time in four starts and the Cleveland Indians’ offense finally awakened in an 9-2 victory Sunday over the Rangers.

Vizquel singled in his first two at-bats, and doubled in his next three as the Indians got a season-high 16 hits and won for just the fourth time in 19 games.

“It’s good to see 16 hits, that’s amazing,” Vizquel said. “We haven’t had this feeling in a long time. This kind of game should bring a lot of confidence back to everyone.”

It was Vizquel’s second five-hit game, his first since July 18, 1991, when he was with Seattle. The three doubles were a career-high.

Matt Lawton homered as the streaky Indians scored their most runs since April 10, when they were in the midst of opening the season 11-1.

Cleveland had been in a tailspin since, and came in batting just .226 while being outscored 118-44 in its last 18 games.

But the Indians roughed up Kenny Rogers (3-1), who entered with the AL’s second-lowest ERA, for five innings and have won two straight for the first time since April 12-13.

Vizquel said Saturday’s win helped the Indians relax and believe in themselves again.

“We were smiling when we came in today,” he said. “We were playing loud music. It’s nice to get that feeling back. When you go 2-15, you don’t think you can play. You don’t think you can get a hit. Everything starts working backwards in your head.”

Travis Fryman and Jim Thome added two RBIs apiece for Cleveland.

Bill Haselman had three hits for the Rangers, who went 4-2 on a road trip to Toronto and Cleveland.

Mariners 10, Yankees 6

New York Ruben Sierra homered and drove in four runs and Joel Pineiro held down New York for six innings as Seattle completed a three-game sweep. The Mariners have won 11 of 12 at Yankee Stadium in the regular season following their third sweep ever in New York. But Seattle’s last two seasons ended in the AL championship series in New York. Bernie Williams homered twice for the Yankees, who were swept for the first time this season. They fell 412 games behind Boston in the AL East their largest deficit since September 1997.

Red Sox 2, Devil Rays 0

St. Petersburg, Fla. Frank Castillo (2-2) allowed three hits in eight innings and Jose Offerman hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly off Steve Kent after Trot Nixon doubled off Ryan Rupe (3-3) in the eighth. Nomar Garciaparra added a solo homer off Esteban Yan in the ninth. Boston, which leads the AL East, has won five straight and has a 20-7 record, the best in the major leagues. Tampa Bay has lost 10 in a row, its longest skid since Sept. 9-20, 2000, and one short of the team record.

Athletics 3, White Sox 2

Chicago Barry Zito (2-2) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, and David Justice homered as Oakland avoided getting swept. Randy Velarde and Scott Hatteberg also drove in runs off Dan Wright (3-3). Frank Thomas homered for the White Sox, who took two of three after losing three. Chicago outscored Oakland 18-6 in this series after being outscored 32-5 at the Coliseum last weekend.

Tigers 7, Twins 6

Minneapolis Jeff Weaver (2-4) gave four runs on six hits in six-plus innings to beat the Twins for the just the third time in 10 career starts and end Minnesota’s 10-game home winning streak. Robert Fick and Wendell Magee each hit two-run homers as part of a five-run fifth inning that gave Detroit a 7-1 lead.

Angels 8, Blue Jays 2

Toronto Ramon Ortiz (3-3) came within one out of his first career shutout before Jose Cruz Jr. and Carlos Delgado hit consecutive home runs. Ortiz (3-3) finished with a five-hitter and tied a career high by striking out 10 as Anaheim won for the ninth time in 10 games.
