National League Roundup: Giants’ Jensen baffles Reds

Bonds belts 400th career home run in San Francisco uniform

? Ryan Jensen had an idea he would pitch early Saturday. What happened after was a surprise.

Jensen helped the San Francisco Giants take a combined no-hitter into the eighth inning before beating the Cincinnati Reds, 3-0, Saturday.

San Francisco's Ryan Jensen acknowledges the crowd after being taken out of the game in the eighth inning. Jensen entered the game with two outs in the first inning and didn't allow a hit until the eighth. The Giants blanked the Reds, 3-0, Saturday in San Francisco.

“I didn’t feel like I had the kind of stuff where I thought I could get everybody out, but it was the best stuff I had all season,” Jensen said.

Barry Bonds homered for the 400th time in a San Francisco uniform as the Giants won their third straight.

Jensen (2-2) took over from Jason Schmidt with two outs in the first inning and carried a no-hitter into the eighth. Jason LaRue broke up the bid with a solid single into left field.

“I’m just glad we had R.J. strong in the bullpen,” Giants manager Dusty Baker said. “He was our minute man today. We had him on alert after Jason warmed up in the bullpen. I knew Jason wasn’t right.”

Jensen was moved to the bullpen following his loss to the Reds on April 27 only because a fifth starter wasn’t needed until May 11. The last time he made a relief appearance was last Sept. 19, when he allowed two runs in two innings.

“Quite frankly he dominated us,” Cincinnati’s Aaron Boone said. “It was embarrassing. He seemed fearless coming in that situation early in the game.”

Bonds established yet another major league standard when he hit his home run. He became the first player ever to hit 400 for one team and 100 for another. Bonds hit 176 home runs with the Pittsburgh Pirates before signing with the Giants as a free agent following the 1992 season.

Astros 3, Mets 1

Houston Carlos Hernandez held New York to four hits over seven innings to lead Houston. Hernandez (3-0) tied his career high with eight strikeouts and walked three, and allowed one earned run. Billy Wagner pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save in five opportunities. Jeff D’Amico (2-2) gave three runs on five hits and struck out five in six innings.

Phillies 6, Rockies 5

Philadelphia Marlon Anderson tied his career high with four RBIs and Doug Glanville hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the sixth inning as Philadelphia defeated Colorado. Jimmy Rollins went 4-for-4 with two triples, a double and two runs scored for the Phillies, who handed the Rockies their second straight loss after a six-game winning streak under new manager Clint Hurdle.

Brewers 6, Marlins 4

Milwaukee Ben Sheets overcame a shaky start to win for the first time since opening day and Richie Sexson drove in three runs as Milwaukee beat Florida. Sheets (2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak spanning five starts and Milwaukee won for just the second time in 11 games.

Cardinals 3, Braves 2

St. Louis Jason Simontacchi worked seven strong innings in his major league debut, rescuing pitching-strapped St. Louis in a victory over Atlanta. Kerry Robinson, Tino Martinez and Placido Polanco drove in a run apiece for the Cardinals, who have won only six of their last 19 but snapped the Braves’ three-game winning streak. The Cardinals have six pitchers, five of them starters, on the disabled list.

Padres 3, Pirates 0

San Diego Kevin Jarvis came off the disabled list to strike out eight in 51*3 scoreless innings and Ryan Klesko hit his 200th career homer as San Diego beat Pittsburgh. The Pirates, who have scored the fewest runs in the majors, were shut out for the third time in five games.

Dodgers 3, Cubs 2

Los Angeles Rookie Kazuhisa Ishii overcame Sammy Sosa’s major league-leading 13th home run to remain undefeated, and Dave Roberts drove in two runs and had a career-high four hits in the Dodgers’ victory.

Ishii became the first Dodgers pitcher to start a season 6-0 since 1988, when Orel Hershiser won his first six decisions en route to a 23-8 record.
