Face painters get new tools

? Makeup artists, including the at-home types, are getting some new tools of the trade.

Several cosmetics companies are offering products sure to get the creative juices flowing once one figures out how to use them.

Make Up For Ever artist Davisha Dadone suggests using the Iridescent Liquid Eye Shadow eyedropper as if it were a spatula.

Chanel has its artist’s palette for aspiring face painters. Les Gouaches De Chanel, which takes its name from a French word that describes an opaque watercolor method, features six tubes of makeup that look like oil paints. The shades, which range from clear to red, also can be mixed in a little accompanying dish with two miniature brushes.

“They’re the correct colors for every skin tone, not just cool or warm,” says Susan Sterling, Chanel’s international makeup artist.

The makeup is for the eyes, cheeks or lips. “It’s very personal,” Sterling says of the kit. “We’re not setting any rules about what goes where.”

She prefers to mix the colors on the back of her hand and apply the makeup with her fingers. She then uses the brushes for blending.

“You can’t really make a mistake,” Sterling adds.

But she offers one professional tip: Mix the makeup with a little bit of powder and then apply to the lips with a brush for long-lasting color.

Another product that needs a little explanation is the Iridescent Liquid Eye Shadow, dispensed by an eyedropper, from Make Up For Ever.

According to Davisha Dadone, a national makeup artist for the brand, the eyedropper basically should be used as a spatula.

For best results, wipe the shadow on hand and blend to the lid with the finger. Using a brush, wipe shadow all over the lid and work upward. Wetting the brush beforehand with water gives a more sheer effect.

If one wants to combine colors, use the white shadow on the inner part of the lid and a darker shade on the outer corner, Dadone advises. (Make sure to test the shades on the back of your hand so that the colors match each eye and one is not lighter or darker than the other.)

Colors include white, pink, blue, gray, copper, brown and green.

Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner helps create a strong lined eye. The gel-based product delivers the look of liquid liner but is applied with an ultra-fine brush. A line of waterproof, high-pigmented color should be drawn along the lash line. Color stays true in an airtight, inkwell jar.

BeneFit’s new Sketching Pencils, available for eyes and lips, are extra long with a soft point for easy blending. The opposite end is a sponge to help fill the color into any blanks.

L’Oreal’s new tube of color is full of Glass Shine lip gloss. It can be worn alone for shine and subtle color or layered over a lipstick. Glass Shine is applied to lips by fingertip or a lipstick brush.
