Huskers rally past Kansas

— Kansas jumped to a 3-0 lead against seventh-ranked Nebraska, but the Jayhawks couldn't hold on and dropped into the loser's bracket Friday night at the Big 12 Softball Tournament.

Third-seeded Nebraska (44-11) scored four runs off three Jayhawk pitchers in the fourth inning en route to a 7-5 victory.

Nebraska won twice, beating Oklahoma State 2-0 before rallying to beat Kansas. In their big fourth inning in the late game, the Cornhuskers scored on a bases-loaded walk, a passed ball, a wild pitch and an RBI double by Nicole Trimboli.

Kansas (33-23) had won its first two games, including a 3-1 victory over No. 2 seed Oklahoma on Thursday. The Jayhawks will have to get past the Sooners when they meet again this morning in an elimination game at Hall of Fame Stadium.

Against Nebraska, Kansas jumped in front in a first inning highlighted by Serena Settlemier's three-run double.

Nebraska pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the first, but Kansas scored two more in the top of the third with help from a Husker error and a double by Amy Hulse.

Amanda Buchholz doubled and scored for Nebraska in the bottom of the third.

Leigh Ann Walker (25-4) relieved starter Peaches James in the fourth and threw no-hit ball the rest of the way. Megan Uquhart walked to lead off the fifth and was the only Jayhawk to reach base against Walker.

Nebraska scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. Reliever Kara Pierce (12-9) fanned the first batter but walked three before being relieved by Kirsten Milhoan.

In other games Friday, Cat Osterman struck out 14 and Texas beat Texas A&M; 2-1.

Earlier, Texas A&M; beat Baylor 5-1 on Selena Collins' fifth-inning grand slam. Baylor (46-17) then stayed alive by eliminating Oklahoma State 4-0 later in the day.

Oklahoma eliminated Iowa State 5-1. The Sooners (42-13) had two hits from Kelli Braitsch, one of them a home run, and two RBIs from Leah Gulla.
