Astros’ Mathews on DL

Houston Houston placed right-hander T.J. Mathews on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained right arm. Mathews has been one of the Astros’ most effective relievers this season, with a 1.69 ERA in nine appearances.

Person injures elbow

Philadelphia Phillies starter Robert Person was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained right elbow. Lefty reliever Hector Mercado was recalled from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. Person was 0-3 mark in his first six starts with a 5.45 ERA.

Blue Jays claim Walker

Toronto Toronto claimed right-hander Pete Walker on waivers from the New York Mets on Friday. Walker, 33, appeared in one game for the Mets this season. He had been designated for assignment on April 29. In parts of five major league seasons, Walker has made 20 relief appearances for the Mets, San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies.

Dellucci on disabled list

Phoenix Arizona placed outfielder David Dellucci on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain on Friday and activated infielder Danny Klassen. Dellucci originally was hurt running the bases on April 15 at Colorado, and the injury had worsened recently. He was hitting .125 with two home runs and two RBIs in mostly a pinch-hitting role.

Prospect to make start for Cardinals today

St. Louis Another minor leaguer is getting a chance to show St. Louis he has major league stuff, with right-hander Jason Simontacchi set to start today against Atlanta.

Simontacchi, 28, was recalled from Triple-A Memphis and replaces, Josh Pearce, who gave up four runs in 413 innings in a 9-6 loss to the Marlins on Thursday and was sent back to Memphis on Friday after three unsuccessful starts and a 7.62 ERA.

Simontacchi was 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA in five starts at Memphis with 24 strikeouts and only five walks in 36 innings.
