Downtown art parade set for Saturday

The 2002 Art Tougeau parade will start at noon Saturday at 13th and Massachusetts streets and travel north to Sixth Street. Parade participants should meet at 10:30 a.m. behind Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

Folks of all ages are invited to join the parade, Charles Jones, Art Tougeau organizer, said. Entries must be wheeled, capable of maintaining the parade’s 5 mph pace and not be obscene or political.

A $15 entry donation is requested, but children’s entries are free. Prizes and trophies will be presented immediately after the 45-minute parade in the parking lot next to the vacant Willie C’s restaurant building at 616 Vt.

Jazz pianist to play at Folly Theatre

Kansas City, Mo. Jazz pianist Marian McPartland will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Folly Theater, 12th and Central streets.

Independence to host Heritage Homes Tour

Independence, Mo. The Fourth Annual Heritage Homes Tour will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Independence.

Homes include a prairie-style house inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture; a Dutch Colonial house; a 1920s-era bungalow built from the salvage of a Victorian mansion; a Victorian two-story frame structure that has been converted into apartments and offices; and a 1 1/2-story bungalow that dates to 1855.

Proceeds will be used to renovate the Waggoner-Gates Mill Office at the National Frontier Trails Center.

Admission is $10. Tickets can be purchased on Independence Square beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Sunday concert set to celebrate Bach

Kansas City, Mo. Bachathon XXIII, a celebration of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, 13th and Broadway streets.

Performers are Roy Belfield Jr., organ, and Ching-Wen Wang, organ, 2 p.m.; Stacie Lightner, organ, 2:30 p.m.; Musica Sacra, cantata, 3 p.m.; Lynn Alfers, organ, 3:30 p.m.; Kansas State University Brass Ensemble and Mary Ellen Sutton, organ, 4 p.m.; James Cockman III, organ, 4:30 p.m.; Robert Jenkins, organ, 5 p.m.; Dina Evans, organ, 5:30 p.m.; Kansas University Early Dance Ensemble, 6 p.m.; Marie Rubis-Bauer, harpsichord, and Alex East, cello, 6:30 p.m.; and Schola Cantorum, cantata, 7 p.m.

The performances are free and open to the public.

Forbes Field concert to feature Kings

Topeka A U.S.O. Canteen Dance will be from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Hangar 602 at Forbes Field. The doors open at 6 p.m.

The dance will feature the Kings of Swing. Participants are encouraged to dress in old uniforms or period costumes.

Admission is $8 a person, and tickets will be available at the door. Proceeds will go to the Combat Air Museum.

Country singer Stone to perform in Ottawa

Ottawa Country music singer Doug Stone will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, Third and Hickory streets.

Opening performers are Lorena Prater and Western Reunion.

In 1990, Stone’s debut single, “I’d Be Better Off (In a Pine Box),” hit No. 4 on the country charts, became a No. 1 country music video and earned a Grammy Award nomination. His other hits include “Fourteen Minutes Old,” “I Never Knew Love,” “In a Different Light” and “Why Didn’t I Think of That.”

Festival to feature arts displays, music

Kansas City, Mo. The third annual Festival of Creativity will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd.

Tents with visual arts displays and demonstrations will be set up on Crown Center Square. Two stages will provide vocal and instrumental performances throughout the day and each evening will feature concerts by All-Metro Band, Choir and Orchestra.

The event is free and open to the public.

Park City to host bluegrass festival

Park City The Ninth Annual Park City Bluegrass Music Festival continues today and Saturday at the Kansas Coliseum, 85th Street North and Interstate 135.

Performers include Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Side of the Mountain Boys; Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys; and J.D. Crowe and the New South.

Hours are noon-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $15 for Friday, $20 for Saturday and $40 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and under are free.
