William N. Stevens

Services for William N. Stevens, 80, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors conducted by Alford Clarke Post No. 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Stevens died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong Lawrence resident.

He was born April 8, 1922, in Lawrence, the son of John W. and Lottie (Bergner) Stevens. He grew up in Lawrence and attended Lawrence public schools.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He served from Oct. 5, 1942, to Dec. 19, 1945, when he was discharged as a staff sergeant.

Mr. Stevens worked for Penny’s Construction for 34 years and retired in May 1987.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 852 and Eagles Post No. 309, both in Lawrence. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 225, Ozawkie. He was a member of Free Methodist Church, Lawrence.

He married Valora Banks on April 13, 1946, in Independence, Mo. She died Nov. 8, 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam Smith, Lawrence; a son, John, Lawrence; a stepdaughter, Martha Wordsworth, Napa, Calif.; his companion, Georgia Owens, Lawrence; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
