Texas’ pitchers tough in sweep of Jayhawks

Longhorns limit KU to two runs

According to the Texas softball press release, Cat Osterman’s name is pronounced “AWE-ster-man.”

After her performance in Saturday’s doubleheader against Kansas University, it may as well be pronounced “AWE-some, man.”

KANSAS' CHRISTI MUSSER slides safely into second base while Texas shortstop Erin Mahoney receives a throw. The Longhorns swept a doubleheader from the Jayhawks, winning both games, 2-1, at Jayhawk Field on Saturday.

The Longhorns freshman pitcher struck out 17 Jayhawks in a complete-game 2-1 victory in the first game, and whiffed four of the five Kansas players she faced in picking up the save in the second game, another 2-1 UT victory.

“We didn’t do a very good job with our discipline at the plate,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said, “and she did a terrific job of taking advantage of what our hitters was doing, which was swinging at the low stuff.”

This season, Osterman (21-6) has thrown two perfect games, struck out 10 or more hitters in 18 games and has 331 strikeouts in 178 innings.

Osterman gave up a leadoff home run to Shelly Musser in the first game, but then struck out the next four Jayhawks.

“She’s a very good pitcher and she made an adjustment after the first inning and we didn’t adjust,” Musser said. “She threw it up and I hit it hard and the rest of the time she threw her drop ball and it worked after that and she stuck with what was working.”

Texas took the lead in the third inning on a single and fielder’s choice after runners reached on a walk and because of miscommunication between Jayhawk infielders.

“That’s what is probably the most frustrating point of the first game, besides all the strikeouts,” Bunge said, “was the fact that we got that run and the way we allowed them to score. It’s very, very frustrating.”

In the second game, Texas (32-9 overall, 5-0 Big 12) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Kansas (19-14, 2-4) tied the game in the second on a single by Amy Hulse.

The Longhorns regained the lead in the sixth, and Osterman relieved starter Amy Bradford in the bottom of the sixth and shut down the Jayhawks for her second save.
