Former Cherokee chief to speak at Kansas State

? Wilma Mankiller, former principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, will address a 9:30 a.m. Tuesday meeting of the American Ethnic Studies Program at Union Forum Hall at Kansas State University.

Haskell Indian Nations University’s New Dawn Dancers and flutist Ron Brave also will perform. Several Haskell students are expected to attend.

Mankiller is the first woman to serve as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. She also founded the Cherokee Nation community development department, where she became involved in several housing, education and health care projects.

Mankiller is the author of “Keeping Pace With the Rest of the World,” and co-author of “The Readers Companion to the History of Women in the U.S.” and “Mankiller: A Chief and Her People.”
