Photography contest seeking entries

Phi Beta Delta, an honor society for international scholars, is seeking entries for its “Picture the World” International Photography Contest.

There are divisions for Kansas University students, faculty, staff and alumni. Within each division are classifications for color or black and white. Under each classification are the categories “people,” “places” and “cultural traces.”

Certificates of merit will be awarded for first, second and third places. The six Best of Class winners and the Best of Show will receive additional prizes.

Winning entries will be featured in an exhibit in late April at KU’s Museum of Anthropology and in September at the Lawrence Public Library.

Entry deadline is 5 p.m. Friday. Entry fee is $3 for participants who are not active members of Phi Beta Delta. Contestants can enter up to three prints.

Author to read works about Vietnam

Kansas City, Mo. Â John Balaban, a poet and leading authority on Vietnamese literature, will read from his works at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Greenlease Gallery at Rockhurst University, 54th Street and Troost Avenue.

Balaban is the author of 11 books of poetry and prose, including “After Our War” and the award-winning “Locusts at the Edge of Summer: New and Selected Poems.” He is poet-in-residence at North Carolina State University.

Lawrence youngster wins music competition

Brian Flescher, Lawrence, was a solo winner at the Sixth Annual High School Honor Recital at Fort Hays State University. Flescher is a marimba player.

Music students in ninth through 11th grades were eligible to enter the competition by submitting a videotape recording of their performance in December. The competition was judged by faculty members at Ohio University in Athens.

Solo winners will perform at the High School Honor Recital at 3 p.m. April 21 in Beach/Schmidt Auditorium on the Fort Hays State campus.

KC jazz group to pay tribute to Cole Porter

Ottawa  The Doug Talley Quartet, a Kansas City acoustic jazz group, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, Third and Hickory. The concert will celebrate composer Cole Porter.

Members of the groups are saxophonist Doug Talley, pianist Wayne Hawkins, bassist Tim Brewer and drummer Keith Kavanaugh.
