Randa, Berger boost Royals in 6-5 victory over Tigers

? Brandon Berger hit a two-run homer and Joe Randa doubled twice as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-5, Friday.

It was the Royals’ final home spring training game in Florida. They have trained the past 15 years here after training in Fort Myers, Fla. from 1969-87. Next year they will share a spring training complex with the Texas Rangers in Surprise, Ariz.

Berger, who was told before the game he had made the opening day roster, homered with Randa aboard in a five-run Royals’ fourth. The inning also included two Detroit errors, which led to three unearned runs.

Royals starter Chad Durbin allowed three runs on five hits, including a two-run homer to Robert Fick.

Steve Sparks was the losing pitcher, although only two of the five runs off of him were earned.

Randa also doubled in the fifth and scored on Brent Mayne’s two-out single.

The Tigers loaded the bases on two Kansas City errors in the ninth, but left fielder Chuck Knoblauch made a diving catch of Brian Rios’ fly for the second out. Cory Bailey allowed an unearned run, but claimed his second save.
