Lions club O-North in baseball opener

? Lawrence High was an offensive machine, banging 11 hits and scoring in six of seven innings to claim an 11-6 Sunflower League baseball victory over Olathe North on Thursday at Olathe District Activities Center.

“We have guys in the lineup, top to bottom, capable of hitting,” LHS coach David Petry said. “We’re going to score runs each time we take the field.”

The Lions (1-0) led 8-3 before the Eagles (1-1) rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fith. LHS junior Aaron Madill came in relief of junior Ryan Rowland with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Madill faced nine batters and didn’t allow a run to post the save.

“He pitched well,” Petry said of Madill, who threw 35 pitches  23 for strikes.

LHS seniors Troy Wingert (2-for-4, RBI) and Mike Morrell (2-for-3, triple and two runs) led the Lions’ offense.

In his LHS debut, junior third baseman Tommy Mangino homered and committed three errors. Mangino transferred from Norman (Okla.) North during the winter break after his father, Mark, became Kansas University’s football coach.

“I think he had a few jitters in the beginning,” Petry said of Tommy. “He struck out looking his first at-bat and had three errors early. He settled down at the plate and the field and played well defensively late in the game. He hit his home-run ball hard, but his next at-bat, he hit a line drive at shortstop that was a lot harder.”

The Lions will play single games Saturday against Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North and Lee’s Summit (Mo.) at Lee’s Summit North. On Tuesday, LHS will play host to Free State at Ice Field.
