Jensen Duathlon Champ: Lawrence’s Brian Jensen and Jerry Pullins finished first and 17th respectively in the amateur portion of last Sunday’s Powerman Alabama, a qualifying race for the Duathlon World Championships. The race consisted of a five-mile run, a 35-mile bicycle ride and another five-mile run.

Shoffner Qualifies: Brett Shoffner of the Lawrence Coyotes Wrestling Club finished third in the U-16 155-pound weight class in the district tournament and qualified to compete in the Kansas Kids Wrestling Tournament.

Heitzman Earns Hat Trick: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won three gold medals in the National Masters Indoor track championships last weekend in Boston. In the ages 70-74 division, Heitzman won the 3,000 meters in 11:28.56, the mile in 5:44.93 and the 800 in 2:37.61.

Ornburn Third: Lawrence Gymnastics Academy’s Chelsey Ornburn finished third in the all-around in Level Six at the Kansas Gymnastics Meet last Saturday in Wichita. Ornburn won the vault and beam events. Teammate Adrienne Struble was 10th in the all-around. In Level Seven, LGA’s Meredith West won the beam and was fourth in all-around. In Level Eight, LGA’s Mallory West won the bars, was third in the all-around and qualified for regionals. In Level Five, Arden Leland was fifth in all-around.

Hodges, Dog Honored: Lawrence’s Mark Hodges and his three-year-old Australian Shepherd, Scout, earned the Most Promising award at the Gateway Stockdog Championships in St. Louis. The award is given to the dog and dog-handler team with the highest combined score in two days of herding competition.

Flames Champs: Sport 2 Sport Flames fourth grade girls basketball team won a tournament in Gardner and finished third in a meet in Newton. Team members are Evan Folks, Ashli Hill, Alex Kincaid, Shea Lounsbury, Shelby Miller, Madison Oller, Krista Seaman, Jasmyn Turner, Kacie Welborn and Wren Wiebe. Coaches are Marv Oller and Wade Wiebe.

City Rec Deadlines: The deadline is next Thursday to register for a girls volleyball camp for fourth through eighth graders. Also, the city parks and recreation department is accepting registrations for youth summer baseball and softball. That deadline is April 18. Youth Baseball Deadline: Player registration deadline is next Monday for Houk-Ice and Holcom summer youth baseball leagues. Applications are available at the Holcom Rec Center. Coaches are still needed for the ages 13-16 leagues. For information, call Brett Urban at 830-0626.

LWC to Send 13 to State: Lawrence Wrestling Club will have 13 participants at the Kansas Kids State Folkstyle tournament this weekend in Topeka. First-place finishers at the district meet were Chase Russell, Boomer Mays, Koty Russell and Shane Grant. Among the second-place finishers were Grady Salzman, Caden Lynch, Reece Conklin, Chris Lane, Nolan Kellerman and Matt Somers. Taking home thirds were Brandon Goodwin, Brendan Halpin and Josh Snider.

Free State Consolation Ice Champs: Free State clipped Kansas City (Mo.) Park Hill South, 3-1, to win the consolation championship of the KC Metro High School Hockey League. David Knight, Stephen Constant and Ben Johnson scored goals for Free State. Colin Davis had two assists and Ross Miller one. Free State goalie Damon Mar stopped 32 of 33 shots.

Orchards Ace: Mike Rice used an 8-iron from 120 yards to make a hole-in-one on the No. 9 hole at Orchards golf course on March 14. Witnesses were Paul Walker and Jared Brandon.

Orchards Ace, II: Tim Notah notched a hole-in-one on the fourth hole at Orchards golf course last Sunday. He drilled an 8-iron shot from 110 yards away. The feat also was witnessed by Martin Unfred and Willie Holladay.
