Driver injured on K-10 in morning truck rollover

A Lawrence man was injured early Wednesday when the pickup truck he was driving did a complete rollover, coming to rest upright in the median strip of Kansas Highway 10 near Eudora, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Michael Anton, 21, 1006 Tenn., was taken by Life Star helicopter to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said. Anton was in good condition late Wednesday, a hospital spokesman said.

About 1:30 a.m., Anton was driving a 1990 Isuzu pickup westbound on K-10 when the vehicle apparently drifted into gravel on the shoulder, Tate said. The vehicle then went out of control and overturned in the median.

Another motorist discovered the accident and reported it, Tate said.

Grass fire claims 150 acres in southwest Douglas County

Osage County firefighters Wednesday evening battled a grass fire that consumed nearly 150 acres in southwest Douglas County.

Between 15 and 20 firefighters from Osage County Fire District No. 4, Wellsville, were called around 7 p.m. to a controlled burn that got out of hand just east of East 550 Road, several miles south of Lone Star Lake, said firefighter Clyde Martin.

Wind, dry conditions and tall grass spread the fire as far west as East 750 Road, where it jumped the road before firefighters could bring it under control around 10 p.m., Martin said.

Firefighters from Willow Springs Township assisted with the blaze, Martin said.The fire never endangered any residences or other structures, Martin said, but it destroyed between 100 and 150 acres of grassland.

Restaurant guest feigns blindness, fails to pay bill

A man pretending to be blind was cited by Lawrence Police Friday night after he allegedly tried to leave a downtown restaurant without paying for a meal.

The suspect, a 23-year-old Tonganoxie man, quit pretending to be blind when confronted by the manager at Wa restaurant, 740 Mass., about the meal tab, police said. The bill amounted to $48 but the suspect only had $30, police said.

A witness in the restaurant at the time told the Journal-World that the man wore sunglasses but didn’t seem to have trouble eating with chop sticks. He had a small dog with him.

Police issued the man a citation to appear in Municipal Court for misdemeanor theft. The man’s name and other details were not available Wednesday.

Police get more complaints on false solicitation calls

Lawrence Police received two more complaints Wednesday from residents saying they had received calls from a law enforcement agency soliciting money.

The solicitors contacted the people by telephone in recent days and said they were soliciting money for the Kansas Law Enforcement Assn., police said.

No such organization exists, Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

Last week at least two people received calls from a solicitor claiming to be with the Lawrence Fraternal Order of Police. The local FOP Lodge No. 2 is not conducting a fund-raiser, Pattrick said.

Police request those who get such calls to fill out a state complaint form at police headquarters in the Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St., Pattrick said.

Pattrick said he hopes numbers from solicitors obtained from caller identification devices will be passed on to police for an investigation.
