KU softball snaps Baylor streak

? Two runs in the first inning were enough for Kansas.

KU senior Megan Urquhart’s two-run double in the first lifted the Jayhawks to a 2-1 Big 12 softball victory over Baylor on Saturday, snapping the Bears’ 24-game home winning streak.

With two outs in the first, KU senior left fielder Christi Musser reached on an error and senior right fielder Leah Tabb followed with a single and stole second base. Urquhart followed with the game-winning hit.

Sophomore Kara Pierce was the winning pitcher. She scattered six hits in five innings and surrendered a run in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Serena Settlemier pitched two innings of hitless relief for her first collegiate save. Settlemier struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh.

“I thought it was a good win for us,” said KU coach Tracy Bunge, whose squad improved to 17-11 overall and 2-1 in Big 12. “I was really pleased with the job Serena Settlemier did in relief. It was a hard-fought victory and both sides played well.”

Kansas and BU will play at 1 p.m. today in the second and final game of the series.
