Daughter charged in mother’s murder

? As the daughter of a Butler County woman faced murder charges in her death, family and friends of the mother expressed sorrow and confusion Wednesday.

The body of Patricia Self, 46, was found Tuesday morning in her burned home near Augusta.

Her daughter, Jennifer Self, 19, and the daughter’s boyfriend, Joshua Robertson, 21, were charged Wednesday with first-degree murder, aggravated arson and aggravated burglary.

The two, being held in the Butler County Jail on $750,000 bond, are scheduled to appear in court on April 15.

“It is very grievous and puzzling, and we just don’t have an answer,” said the victim’s father-in-law, J.R. Self of Augusta.

He said Jennifer Self lived at home with her parents, Patricia and Roger, and her brother, Steven, 22.

Jennifer’s parents had not been happy that their daughter was involved with Robertson, said Patricia’s brother, Gary Queen of Augusta. He said they thought he was a bad influence and a troubled person.

The two had known each other for only about a month, Queen said. Robertson had asked to stay at the home with his girlfriend’s family, but her parents would not let him, J.R. Self said.

Edsel Lovette, pastor of the Assembly of God church in Augusta, said Jennifer regularly attended services with her parents.

Mrs. Self was the church organist and she also volunteered with Missionettes, a girls club, teaching Bible lessons, doing crafts and leading field trips.

“She was an all-around great woman,” Lovette said. “We’re just all still numb yet.”
