Exhibit captures images of space hardware

Hutchinson  Photographs on display at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center capture what has become of the launch pads and hardware that propelled the nation to the moon in 1969.

Rust and weather have taken a toll on much of the equipment at Cape Canaveral and other U.S. space flight and testing facilities. Photographer Roland Miller sets out to chronicle the decay through the 43 images that make up the exhibit, “Abandoned in Place.” It is open to the public, free of charge, through August.

“The goal I set for myself was to document it, but at the same time, to make it artistic, to go beyond what the government would do,” Miller said.

“Once, this was the focal point of our nation, and now they are just these decrepit, decaying edifices out in the middle of nowhere.”

The Salt Lake City resident devoted six years to photographing the scenes. He said the launch facilities are too large to be restored or even maintained, so he hopes his photos can help preserve at least a part of them.

Teen-ager arrested in senior’s death

Washington, Kan. Â A 19-year-old man was arrested in the killing of an elderly Washington man who was found dead in his home Saturday morning.

Investigators from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation apprehended the teen-ager Saturday night at a motel in Manhattan.

Two men and a woman who were staying with the teen at the motel were taken into custody for questioning, sheriff’s officials said.

The body of Alva Shaw, 75, was found after friends became worried when he twice missed his daily trips to a local convenience store and several coffee shops.

Washington County Atty. Kim Cudney said Shaw was found on his bedroom floor, which was covered in blood. His silver 2000 Ford Mustang was missing from his garage.

Authorities found the car outside the motel.

Police shoot, kill armed suspect

Kansas City, Mo. Â Police shot and killed a gun-wielding man late Sunday in the city’s popular Westport entertainment district as St. Patrick’s Day festivities were winding down, authorities said.

Police on Monday identified the man as Kirt J. Morrisey, 46, and said he was wanted by authorities in Nevada in connection with an assault case outside Las Vegas.

Security officers spotted the man armed with a handgun outside a nightclub about 11 p.m., police Capt. Cy Ritter said.

Morrisey then ran about a block from the scene and was spotted by police. He pointed the gun at the officers and yelled at them, Ritter said. The suspect then ran into the middle of the street in front of Broadway Baptist Church, again yelling and pointing his weapon.

That’s when police opened fire. Morrisey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Church officials said the building was riddled with bullets.
