Jayhawks lose again in last at-bat, swept by Baylor

? For the third straight game, Kansas University’s baseball team jumped in front of No. 10 Baylor, and for the third straight game the Bears rallied to win in their final at-bat.

Baylor needed 11 innings on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the Jayhawks, winning 5-4 at Baylor Ballpark.

Kansas (10-6 overall, 1-5 Big 12) lost the first game of the series, 5-3, on Friday night after taking a three-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, and dropped Game Two of the series, 15-9, on Saturday as Baylor (17-6, 7-2) scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth.

In the series finale, Kansas jumped up 3-0 on the Bears. In the top of the first inning, KU sophomore right fielder Matt Tribble belted a two-run homer to right followed by freshman catcher Cole Armstrong’s RBI single in the second.

The Bears sliced the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by left fielder Tim Hartshorn.

In the top of the seventh, the Jayhawks pushed their lead to 4-2. Tribble singled up the middle to open the inning, sophomore second baseman Ryan Baty followed with a single and chasing BU starter Justin Taylor.

After reliever Trey Taylor struck out designated hitter Kevin Wheeler, senior third baseman Ryan Klocksien delivered an RBI single up the middle to give Kansas a two-run cushion.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and runners on first and second, Kansas starting pitcher Jeff Davis coaxed a ground ball to second base, but it was misplayed by Baty allowing a run to score from second. Baylor tacked on another run after a pair of Davis wild pitches to tie the game at 4-all.

Baylor shortstop Trey Webb, who had started a double play to end KU’s half of the 11th, led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the right-field line. Paul Witt then laced a single to center field to drive home Webb with the winning run.

KU’s Wheeler (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season as Baylor improved to 21-2 all time against Kansas. Kyle Edens earned the win for Baylor to improve to 3-2.

Davis, who worked nine innings for Kansas, allowed eight hits and two earned runs. He struck out five and walked just two.

“Davis threw outstanding this afternoon,” Baylor coach Steve Smith said. “He was exceptional and he deserved to win.”

Tribble led the Jayhawks offensively with three base hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Baty extended his career-best hitting streak to 10 games with a 1-for-5 effort.

Kansas will travel to Edinburg, Texas, on Tuesday and Wednesday for a pair of games with Texas-Pan American.
