March 17, 2002

— Blake Stein, making his first spring training start, allowed one run and five hits in five innings Saturday to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Detroit Tigers, 14-2.

Stein retired eight in a row during one stretch and 11 of his last 12 batters.

Kit Pellow and Raul Ibanez each had three hits and a home run for Kansas City. Pellow homered leading off a five-run seventh and ended it with a drive that Jacob Cruz caught with a leap, extending his glove above the fence in center.

Ibanez homered in the third off Nate Cornejo, who has lost three straight starts, and singled home in a run in the first.

Cornejo allowed seven runs  three earned  and 10 hits in 32¼3 innings as the Tigers committed four errors. In his past three starts, Cornejo has allowed 21 hits and 11 earned runs in 82¼3 innings.

Mike Sweeney, who leads the AL with a .514 spring average, went 2-for-4 with a two-run double. He has 10 hits in his past 14 at-bats.

Detroit's Shane Halter singled in his first at-bat and has hit safely in 12 of his 13 games.
