Royals’ Stein effective in 14-2 rout of Tigers

? Blake Stein, making his first spring training start, allowed one run and five hits in five innings Saturday to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Detroit Tigers, 14-2.

Stein retired eight in a row during one stretch and 11 of his last 12 batters.

Kit Pellow and Raul Ibanez each had three hits and a home run for Kansas City. Pellow homered leading off a five-run seventh and ended it with a drive that Jacob Cruz caught with a leap, extending his glove above the fence in center.

Ibanez homered in the third off Nate Cornejo, who has lost three straight starts, and singled home in a run in the first.

Cornejo allowed seven runs three earned and 10 hits in 323 innings as the Tigers committed four errors. In his past three starts, Cornejo has allowed 21 hits and 11 earned runs in 823 innings.

Mike Sweeney, who leads the AL with a .514 spring average, went 2-for-4 with a two-run double. He has 10 hits in his past 14 at-bats.

Detroit’s Shane Halter singled in his first at-bat and has hit safely in 12 of his 13 games.
