‘Up to us’

To the editor:

The article “Schooling sex ed” published in Tuesday’s newspaper (18 & Under) gave me many things to think about. I realized that it bothers me that people think condoms should be offered in school. While this letter may bring ridicule from my fellow classmates, I firmly believe that condoms do not have a place in the Lawrence schools.

Teaching students about sex is the first step in a student’s decision, but after that, it is completely left up to us. I agree with Supt. Randy Weseman that offering condoms would be like taking sides. I also think that if students do choose to have sex, they are mature enough to go buy their own condoms at the grocery store. If students are uncomfortable or will not buy their own condoms, they are obviously not ready to have sex or face the consequences that come with it. If you can’t buy a simple condom at the age of 16, how are you going to buy diapers and formula for your child at the age of 16?
