Huntsville, Texas ? Kansas University junior women’s golfer Heather Rose won on the second sudden-death playoff hole to claim the Waterwood National Women’s Spring Invitational.

Rose fired a 78 during the final round Tuesday for a three-round total of 235 on the 5,983-yard, par-72, Waterwood National Golf Club.

“The course played really hard today,” said Rose, who’s from Martinsville, Ind. “I am pleased with my shots. I was really nervous during the playoff, but I felt very confident and it worked out for me.”

The Jayhawks shot 987 as a team to finish seventh in the 17-team event.

“Today was a very difficult day for everyone,” KU coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. “Overall, we played OK, and I am very excited for Heather, winning a two-hole championship. She played phenomenal today.”

Arkansas-Little Rock won with 966 strokes. Nebraska took second with 971. Nevada was third with 977.

KU junior Jill MacDonald finished the tournament with 241, good for a share of ninth place. Sophomore Jennifer Bawanan carded a 253 and tied for 32nd. Kristy Straub fired a 91 for a total of 260 and a tie for 51st place.

After being disqualified during the first round, junior Tiffany Kruggel shot an 89 Tuesday and finished deadlocked for 84th place.

Kansas will challenge the College of Charleston on March 21 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
