FUMC offers ‘Wednesdays in Lent’

The “Wednesdays in Lent” program continues this week at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

The evening includes supper and fellowship at 5 p.m.; freewill donations accepted. Small group Lenten studies begin at 6 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. Taize service with music and silence for reflection and prayer.

Trinity Episcopal honors mothers

Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will celebrate “Mothering Sunday,” the English version of Mother’s Day. All mothers in the congregation will be recognized and the traditional Simnel cake will be served at receptions after the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services.

Lenten programs continue Wednesday with a healing prayer service at 6 p.m. followed by supper. The program this week is by Richard Eversole, who will discuss Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.”

Clinton Assembly to induct deacons

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway, will induct three new deacons to its board during the Sunday morning service. The message’s theme is on membership and belonging, with text from Nehemiah and the Book of Acts.

Mark and Vicki Alexander, missionaries to South Africa, will be guests at the Sunday evening service.

Plymouth children present musical

Children in the Carol and Chapel choirs at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will present “By the Sea” during the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday services.

Starting Sunday, coffee and fellowship will be offered to parents of children’s choir members and other parents at 8:30 a.m. in the Mayflower Room.

West Side Presbyterian celebrates women

West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive, will be “Celebrating the Gifts of Women” during the 11 a.m. Sunday service. Members of the Women’s Assn. will lead the congregation in worship with Connie Ducey, lay elder, bringing the message.

The event is part of International Women’s Day, as designated by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Unity welcomes guest musicians

Musicians Dennis Mercer and Danielle Miller will join Unity Church of Lawrence, 416 Lincoln, for worship this weekend.

Wheatland offers ‘Christianity 101’

Wheatland Church of Christ, 1449 Kasold Drive, will start a “Christianity 101 Â Knowing God” class at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Darrell Brazell will present the story of God’s desire to be in an intimate relationship with his children.

Unitarian program features two groups

The Sunday program at Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship, 1263 N. 1100 Road, will feature Joylin Kline of Interfaith Caring Neighbors and Lea Carland of Women’s Transitional Care Services. The program is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Taize services offered during Lent

Taize services, co-sponsored by St. John the Evangelist and Plymouth Congregational churches, will be offered Sunday evenings during Lent.

The ecumenical services, which combine song, scripture and silent prayer, are from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in St. John’s sanctuary, 1234 Ky.

Overbrook youth plan chili dinner

Overbrook  The youth group at Overbrook Christian Church will serve a chili soup fund-raiser dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. March 16 at the church, on the eastern edge of town on U.S. Highway 56. Proceeds will help support the group’s July mission trip to Mexico.

Trinity Lutheran sets Wednesday program

The Wednesday evening program at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., continues this week with the eucharist at 6 p.m. in the chapel, followed by a soup supper at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The Rev. Michael Kerr, interim pastor, will lead Holden Evening Prayer at 7 p.m. in the chapel followed by a sermon-study.

Children’s activities continue at 7 p.m. Child care is provided throughout the evening. Youth confirmation will not meet.

St. Margaret’s offers Lenten program

The Lenten program “Prayer  A Way of Life” continues at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The all-parish party will be from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Catholic Singles set planning meeting

The Catholic Adult Singles Divorce Support group’s March 17 meeting is canceled.

The group will have a planning meeting at 7 p.m. March 19 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

Professor to preach at Peace Mennonite

Jim Juhnke, history professor at Bethel College, will preach on “American History and the Myth of Redemptive Violence” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Peace Mennonite Church. He will also speak during 9:30 a.m. Sunday school. Juhnke’s latest book is “The Missing Peace: The Search for Alternatives to Violence in U.S. History.”

Corpus Christi sets parish council meeting

Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St., plans a parish council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday in room 212.

The adult choir will practice at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

St. John’s plans prayer service

The sacrament of anointing the sick will be celebrated after all Sunday liturgies this weekend at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky. This includes the anticipated Sunday liturgy at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

A prayer service at 6 p.m. Monday will mark the six-month anniversary of terrorist attacks on the United States. The 45-minute service will include prayer, scripture readings, music and adoration of the blessed sacrament.

The third and final session of the Lenten series “Tuesdays with Mike” will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the parish hall. Mike Scherschlight will discuss teaching love and sexual values to children.
