A standard flower show titled “The Magic of Spring” was Feb. 22-24 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Lawrence Garden and Home Show. The show was sponsored by the following clubs: Designers’ Guild, Green Thumb Garden Club, Lawrence Flower Club, Meadowlark Garden Club, Prairie Acres Garden Club and Lawrence African Violet Club.

Blue-ribbon winners in design were Jean McBride, Carroll Ammar, Ruth Sleeper, Mildred Kratt, Ginny Beene, Karen Booker, Kit Carlsen, Marrillie Good, Mary Lynn Stuart and Leeann Johnson.

Special awards in design were given to Mildred Kratt, Distinction; Kit Carlsen, Table Artistry; Mary Lynn Stuart, Designer’s Choice; and Jean McBride, Petite. Ginny Beene received the Sweepstakes award.

Blue ribbon winners in horticulture were: Raymond Russell, Joyce Schild, Carol Ahlert, Mary Lynn Stuart, Beth Smith, Nane Halverhout, Millie Olsen, Ann Phillips, Carol Francis, Hazel Stellmacher, Mildred Kratt, Ginny Beene, Walter Murphy and Karen Booker.

Special awards in horticulture were given to Hazel Stellmacher, Award of Merit No. 1; and Raymond Russell, Award of Merit No. 2. Millie Olsen received the Award of Horticultural Excellence. Raymond Russell earned the Sweepstakes award.

Bishop Seabury Academy, Lawrence, announces its honor roll for the second quarter of 2001-2002. Students who made honors are:

The Lawrence Christian Drill Teams won numerous awards during the Kansas Spectacular Jan. 26 in Olathe. The director is Kathy Locke, and the assistant director is Caryn Oyler. Instructor is Jessica Oyler.

The Sparklers, kindergarteners through second-graders, won the Double Division One Team Trophy, Judges Award for Novelty Category and Best Overall Presentation.

The Lil’ Dazzlers, third- through fifth-graders, received the Sweepstakes Team Trophy and Best Overall Precision award.

The Junior/Senior Dazzlers, sixth-graders through seniors, earned the Sweepstakes Team Trophy, Gussie Nell Davis Award of Excellence and Judges Award for Pom Category.

The Lawrence Christian Drill Teams also attended the Midwest Pom and Dance Competition March 2 in Ponca City, Okla.

The Lil’ Dazzlers won the Sweepstakes Team Trophy, Gussie Nell Davis Award of Excellence, Best Overall Precision award, Judges Award for Prop Category, Judges Award for Novelty Category and Best In Class Intermediate Team Private.

The Junior/Senior Dazzlers earned the Sweepstakes Team Trophy, Gussie Nell Davis Award of Excellence, Judges Award for Novelty Category, Best Overall Precision award, Judges Award for Prop Category and Best In Class Senior Private Team.

The following individuals won awards: Alyssa Rudman, Intermediate Solo Winner; Amanda Locke, Intermediate Solo First Runner Up; Kristi Rudman, Junior Solo Winner; Emma Markley and Caroline Markley, Junior Duet Best in Class; and Lacey Thies, Amanda Locke and Alyssa Rudman, Intermediate Ensemble Best in Class.

Adriane Mercer, Lawrence, was named to the Ottawa University Dean’s Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Tracy G. Karas.

Jennifer Dean, Ottawa, was named to the university’s Dean’s List. She is the daughter of Mike and Debbie Dean.

Jason Cotton, Lawrence, received his associate of arts degree from Wichita State University during the fall 2001 semester.

William Johnson, Lawrence, received his bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University during the fall 2001 semester.

Christopher Lemmon, Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2001 semester at Wheaton College, Wheaton Ill, by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Lemmon, Lawrence.

Jodi Scharenberg, Lawrence, has been selected as a Student Ambassador at Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, where she will assist the Admissions Office with the recruitment of prospective students.

Emporia State University recently presented William Shakespeare’s famous play “Macbeth.” Several area students were part of the play.
