Kmart Corp. announced Friday it will close 284 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico, but the Lawrence store is not among those to be closed.

Kansas store closings are a Big Kmart store at 240 E. 29th St. in Topeka and a store in Newton.

No date has been set for the stores to close, but Kmart officials said the locations will remain open at least until a March 20 hearing by the court overseeing the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding.

About 22,000 jobs will be eliminated with the store closings.
