Norma Jean Whitebird

— She was born May 2, 1938, on the Kickapoo Reservation, Horton, the daughter of Herbert Sr. and Grace (Anderson) Ross. She attended Haskell Indian Nations University.

Mrs. Whitebird was a residential specialist at Haskell. Before that, she worked at Horton Garment Factory and then as a community health representative for the Kickapoo Tribe.

She was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe, its Drum Religion and the Northeast Kansas Health Board.

She married Leslie J. Whitebird on Oct. 10, 1957, in Hiawatha. He died Dec. 29, 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Arlan Whitebird, Curtis Simon and Leonard Thomas Jr., all of Horton; a brother, Harvey Ross Sr., Horton; 17 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Three sons, Leslie Herbert Whitebird, Alvin Lee Whitebird and Albert James Whitebird, died earlier.

Friends may call today at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton.
