CBS Sports crew films segment at Watkins Museum

A film crew with CBS Sports spent about an hour Friday at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., taping an interview with museum historian Steve Jansen.

“It’s my understanding they’re putting together a two-minute-40-second feature on the Kansas-Missouri border wars of the 1850s and 1860s, and how they fit into the KU-Missouri basketball rivalry,” said Jansen, shown in the photo above.

Plans call for the segment to air Sunday during halftime of the Kansas men’s basketball game at Missouri. The game begins at 1:05 p.m. on Sunflower Broadband Channels 5 and 13.

Jansen said he may not make the final cut because the film crew wanted him to emphasize the Quantrill angle more than he wanted to do.

“But I wouldn’t do it. I refused. I told them they were being much too simplistic.”

Law enforcement: Prisoner flees holding cell

A county prisoner enjoyed a few minutes of freedom Thursday when he walked away from a holding cell after a construction worker opened the wrong door at the Douglas County Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St.

Chad Edmonds, 32, Ottawa, was being held in a small room used as a holding cell after being arrested for probation violation, Douglas County Undersheriff Bill Shepard said. Edmonds was to be taken to a court hearing.

Sheriff’s officers learned of the incident moments after it occurred and relayed a description to Lawrence Police as well as other sheriff’s officers. Police found Edmonds at 11th and Vermont streets and took him back into custody, Shepard said. No additional charges against Edmonds will be requested.

Crime: Suspect arrested in county for parole violation

A Lawrence man convicted in 1997 of trying to blow up a Kansas Highway Patrol car with a pipe bomb was arrested Friday in Douglas County for parole violation.

Jeffrey A. Campbell, 24, was being sought by the Kansas Department of Corrections for absconding from parole supervision. Douglas County law enforcement authorities had reason to believe he was in the area, Sheriff’s Lt. Ken Massey said.

Sheriff’s officers Friday afternoon found the suspect at a residence near Eudora. Campbell was taken into custody without incident, Undersheriff Bill Shepard said.
