Sheriff’s Office investigating report of criminal sodomy

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers are investigating the reported sodomizing of a 15-year-old girl.

The incident allegedly occurred on Feb. 10 in the northwestern part of the county and was reported to the Sheriff’s Office Feb. 11, Lt. Kathy Tate said.

Officers are investigating a 38-year-old Douglas County man as a possible suspect, Tate said. No arrests have been made. Information about the incident will be sent to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review, Tate said.

The department would release no other information about the alleged crime.

Shape-note singing event planned at Watkins Museum

The Kaw Valley Shape Note Singing Assn. will have a shape-note sing from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Watkins Community Museum of History, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

The event is free, and newcomers are welcome.

Shape-note singing is a participatory a cappella singing tradition that emphasizes singing for the joy of it, rather than performance.

KU music student to perform in Colorado

Jeff Timmons, a Kansas University senior and winner of the Parks 33rd annual Collegiate Solo Competition, will perform Saturday with the Arapahoe Philharmonic in Englewood, Colo.

He will perform a piece by composer Jacques Ibert, “Concertino da Camera for Alto Saxophone and 11 Instruments.”

Timmons is studying saxophone and clarinet at KU with music professors Vince Gnojek and Larry Maxey. He will begin earning his master’s degree in performance this fall at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he will study with his father, Tim Timmons, associate professor of saxophone and associate dean of music.

Painting ceramics raises money for Jubilee CafB>

Helping feed Lawrence’s homeless and needy populations could be as easy as painting a bowl or a plate.

Until March 29, volunteers can purchase and paint bowls or plates at Sunfire Ceramics, 1002 N.H., then donate the dishes to Into the Streets Week’s Empty Bowl Project.

Into the Streets Week, an annual event sponsored by Kansas University’s Center for Community Outreach, introduces students to volunteer opportunities in Lawrence.

Dishes donated to the Empty Bowl Project will be sold on the lawn of KU’s Stauffer-Flint Hall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 3. Proceeds will benefit Jubilee Cafa local kitchen that serves breakfast to homeless and in-need community members on Tuesday and Friday mornings in a restaurant-style environment.
