Open house offers tour of Eudora wastewater plant

About 50 people turned out to get a closer look at Eudora’s new wastewater treatment plant Saturday.

Burns & McDonnell engineering company, Kansas City, Mo., and CAS Construction Company, Topeka, sponsored the open house. Both companies had worked on the planning and construction of the plant.

“We just wanted to invite people down to see where their tax dollars went,” said John Mitchell, engineer with Burns & McDonnell.

The plant was constructed from August 1998 to April 1999, much faster than the normal time of three years, Mitchell said. It was also constructed for about $2.8 million $2 million less than similar plants.

The plant is currently running at about 50 percent, Mitchell said, because it was designed to grow with the city with a 20-year window period.

It handles about 400,000 gallons of water a day, but it has the capability to treat a million gallons.

“What comes in is dingy and dirty, and what comes out is crystal clear,” Mitchell said.

Culture: Concert to combine visual art with carillon

A carillon concert and visual art exhibition will unite today for a unique presentation.

Sabin Levi, a doctorate candidate in organ and composition at Kansas University and former carillonneur at Brigham Young University, will perform at 5 p.m. at the KU Campanile.

A tour of the Campanile will be offered after the concert.

Bill Bowerman will display his line drawings, pastels, photographs and scanograms. Bowerman is past president of the Lawrence Art Guild.

As part of the concert, Levi will perform a composition by Bowerman titled “The Birth of the Muse.” The concert also will include works by J.S. Bach and Mathias van den Gheyn.
