Riling, Burkhead & Nitcher, Chartered, announces the addition of three attorneys, L. Stephen Garlow, J. Shannon Garrett and Andrew D. Steinberg.

Garlow was general counsel and secretary for Innovex (North America) Inc., and Innovex America Holding Company, from 1996 until last fall. Innovex is the drug commercialization and marketing division of Quintiles, the largest global provider of outsourcing services for the pharmaceutical industry. Garlow served as senior vice president for the law, quality assurance and regulatory services department. Garlow practices in the areas of business law, employment law, intellectual property and regulatory compliance. He has a juris doctorate from Washburn University.

Garrett served as a research attorney for the Kansas Court of Appeals from 1998 to 2001 and established a private practice in Lawrence before moving to Riling, Burkhead & Nitcher. He practices family and criminal defense law. He received a juris doctorate from Kansas University.

Steinberg practices in the areas of civil and criminal litigation, labor and employment and corporate law. He received a certificate in the Media, Law and Policy Program. He earned a juris doctorate from KU.

A team of community leaders from Lawrence has completed the Kansas Health Foundation 2002 Leadership Institute. Participants were: Karen Christilles, Lied Center; Kathy Clausing, Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Assn.; Sara Corless, Douglas County Community Foundation; Phyllis Lawton, Southwest Junior High School; Nancy Longhurst, Chamber of Commerce; Eric Scott, First State Bank and Trust of Lawrence; Rob Scott, youth volunteer; and Peggy Wallert, Cottonwood Inc.

Participants learned about the state of children’s health in Kansas, and how to create an environment in their communities where children can grow up healthy. The institute attracts a high-profile panel of national and regional experts on children’s health and leadership.

Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. recently added five new members to its board of directors for 2002 at its June 18 meeting. New members are Becky Harwick, Kansas Credit Union Assn.; Steve Newell, Central National Bank; Scott Taddiken, law student at Washburn University; Mary Gentry, Breakthrough House; and Kathy Lacy, Bank of America.

Housing and Credit Counseling is a nonprofit organization that provides education and counseling on credit, debt payment, budgeting, and homeownership issues with offices in Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan and Emporia.

Janis Bunker, head of the Lawrence branch of The Trust Company of Kansas, is beginning her term as president of the Kansas Bankers Assn.’s Trust Division. Bunker’s efforts will focus on monitoring, advising and educating Kansas bank trust departments and trust companies on regulatory changes and legislative issues. She also will conduct a fall conference. She will serve on several banking committees. Bunker will attend a trip to Washington, D.C., where she will meet with Kansas legislators, regulatory agencies and national banking associations. She also will preside over the KBA Trust Division board and co-chair the MoKan regional trust conference in 2003.

Bunker recently attended the 2002 MoKan Midwest Trust and Financial Services conference in Kansas City, Kan., along with Dan Brogren.

Brogren is vice president and trust officer for the Lawrence branch.

Dianne Allison, vice president and trust officer with The Trust Company of Kansas, has been elected to the Kansas Bankers Assn.’s board of directors. Allison will serve a three-year term. She will provide insight into legislative and regulatory issues, help plan the Kansas Bankers Assn. Fall conference and plan the MoKan Midwest Trust and Financial Services conference in 2003.

Mary Bateson, a certified groomer, has joined the animal care team at Bradley Animal Hospital. Bateson has 27 years of experience grooming both dogs and cats.

The Northeast Kansas Society of Financial Service Professionals, Topeka, installed new officers and directors at its annual meeting in June at the Shawnee Country Club, Topeka.

The new officers are: Gary Tilley, president, Farm Bureau Financial Service; Robert Schumann, vice president, Focus Financial Advisors; Mark Young, secretary/treasurer, Security Benefit Group; William Rogenmoser, immediate past president, Gregg & Rognemoser Agency.

The U.S. Small Business Administration has extended to Sept. 30 the nationwide filing deadline for small businesses affected by the 9-11 attacks to apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

The loans are available to eligible small businesses that suffered substantial economic injury as a direct result of the terrorist attacks or a federal action taken in response to the attacks. The loans will provide small businesses with the working capital needed to pay ordinary and necessary operating expenses they can’t cover such as fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills.

Small businesses may apply for a working capital loan of up to $1.5 million. The interest rate on these loans is 4 percent with a maximum term of up to 30 years. The SBA determines the amount of economic injury, the term of each loan and the payment amount based on the financial circumstances of each borrower.

Kevin Burenheide, an investment representative for Edward Jones in Lawrence, has completed his master’s degree in business administration from Rockhurst University. Burenheide specializes in tailoring investment strategies to meet the needs and goals of individual investors and business owners.

Nine Realtors from Lawrence Realty Associates attended the Hobbs Herder Mega Marketing seminar June 13-14 in Kansas City. The seminar was designed to help Realtors promote themselves and develop strategic marketing plans. Among the techniques covered were development and effective use of Web sites, creation of dynamic ads, brochures and direct mailings, and using research questionnaires as a marketing tool.

Among those who attended the seminar were Pat Flavin, Carrie Sinks, Teresa Ohlemeier, Ken Ollila, Leslie Foust, Greg Moore, Dana Duellman, Greg Uhrich and Rozi Foreman.

Dale Davis, president and CEO of Sauder Custom Fabrication in Emporia, will become the chairman of the board for the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday. KCCI elected new officers and directors at its quarterly meeting June 4 in Hutchinson. Among the new officers is Shirley Martin-Smith, of Adecco Personnel Services in Lawrence, who was elected first vice chair. She will serve a one-year term beginning Monday.

Bill Thornton, of Midwest Grain in Atchison, will be among the 11 members serving on KCCI’s executive committee.

Among the new directors is John Immel, of Petefish, Immel & Heeb in Lawrence.

Honors and awards

Lawrence Memorial Hospital recently awarded Vision Awards, the highest honor in its recognition program. The award recognizes individuals or teams who have helped LMH or the community. Recipients are nominated by other hospital employees and selected by a committee. Employees may choose to receive either a $500 award or a $1,000 savings bond. Among those who received awards were:

Aynsley Anderson, community education coordinator, and Allyson Leland, director of Volunteer Services, were recognized for their role in developing a “Play Hospital” program to educate children about health, safety and hospital information.

Deadre McClendon and Erica Quinlan, who work in the Admissions Department, co-chaired LMH’s participation in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. They were recognized for getting more than 100 people to participate in helping build and organize the hospital’s float, which received a third-place award. The $100 prize was donated to the LMH Employee CARE Fund to assist employees in need.

Jesse Thies, manager of the Runza Restaurant in west Lawrence, received the Mr. Hustle award during the company’s annual meeting. He was selected for the award by proving himself as a loyal and devoted employee to Runza restaurants. He received an all-expense paid trip to Chicago as part of the award.
