J-W’s looking for Lawrence’s most eligible bachelor

There’s a saying that a woman has to meet a lot of frogs before she meets her prince. Well, those frog-gigging days are over.

The Journal-World is on a quest to find the city’s most eligible bachelors and we’re asking our readers, both male and female, to give us a hand.

We’re looking for men who are single and at least 21 years of age. The bottom line: They should be someone you would want your sister, daughter or best friend to hook up with.

Movie puts viewers in the circus ring

Kansas City, Mo. “Cirque du Soleil Journey of Man,” a three-dimensional, large-screen movie, will be shown Thursday through Jan. 5 at the Extreme Screen theater at Union Station, Pershing Road and Main Street.

The movie is a mystical journey exploring human development from birth to maturity using the unique artistry and music of Cirque du Soleil. The movie is rated G and runs 38 minutes. It is narrated by actor Ian McKellen.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for children ages 4-12. Tickets are available at the theater.

‘Lullaby of Broadway’ coming to Lied Center

“Lullaby of Broadway,” a concert of the music and dance from some of Broadway’s most beloved musicals, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. July 14 at the Lied Center.

The show, which is being staged in the Lawrence area before embarking on a national tour, features elegant costumes and a cast of Broadway talent. The show includes numbers from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Cats,” “Evita,” “Rent,” “Fosse” and other Broadway showtunes.

Admission is $40 and $34 for adults and $20 and $17 for children. Tickets are available at the Lied Center Box Office, 864-ARTS.

“Lullaby of Broadway” also will be presented at 8 p.m. July 16 at the Topeka Performing Arts Center and 8 p.m. July 17-19 at the Folly Theater in Kansas City, Mo.

Butterfly painter to show works in Topeka library

Topeka Bill Howe, Ottawa, who is known for his butterfly paintings, will display his works Monday through Sept. 1 in the Alice Sabatini Gallery in the Topeka and Shawnee County Library, 1515 S.W. 10th St.

An informal open house will be from noon to 4 p.m. July 6. Howe will be available to talk to guests about the 42 works in the show.

City band to present Fourth of July concert

The Lawrence City Band will present “Our Own 4th of July Concert” at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the gazebo at South Park, 11th and Massachusetts streets. The band is conducted by Robert Foster.

The program includes “American Overture for Band” by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins; “The Ramparts” by J. Clifton Williams; “Yankee Doodle” by D.W. Reeves; “Semper Fidelis” by John Philip Sousa; “Marching Through Georgia,” arranged by Sousa; “A Tribute to Irving Berlin” by Warren Barker; “Armed Forces Salute” by Bob Lowden; “God of Our Fathers,” arranged by Claude T. Smith; “America the Beautiful,” arranged by Carmen Dragon; and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by Sousa.

The concert will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Thursday on KLWN-AM 1320.
